Our local Tampa General Hospital has more than once saved the life of my partner who suffers from a rare genetic defect called protein c deficiency. This ailment essentially causes excessive blood clots to form because the gene to regulate clotting correctly is missing. Hence, people with this problem must be treated with the caustic drug warfarin just as stroke victims often are prescribed. To keep his blood therapeutic, my partner must be tested almost weekly for his blood clotting factor to verify if he's at danger for lethal pulmonary embolisms or if on the other side of the scale, extreme anemia causing bruising and quick bleed outs from small things like a scratch or a mosquito bite. Without the help of our local hospitals, my partner might have succumbed to his genetic defect ailment years ago.
I have been an OR RN for 48 years. From Michigan to NC to my current job in FL. I have always worked in not for profit healthcare systems until these past 2 years. I am appalled at the difference. Other than the fact that the insurance 'behemoth industry' has literally destroyed our ability to give and receive quality healthcare, a for profit healthcare system literally prevents compassionate, empathic and successful healthcare to be given. I am utterly astonished at the difference. It will never change where profts and money prevails. Does anyone see how much money the presidents and CEO's make per year? I can't even get equipment, supplies or staffing to care for surgical patients and yet we have to exceed their expectations for profit. It is disgusting.
